REPAIR
A space does not need to be finished to hold meaning. Shadow Walls, a former Catskill resort inn long left to itself and only recently taken on by artist Anna Cone, received over twenty artists as it was: plaster crumbling, ceilings open to their joists, walls stripped to bare lath. REPAIR asked each of them to respond to a specific location within the house and grounds, forgoing the neutrality of a conventional gallery for something more contingent.
The works that emerged extended mending beyond the physical: acts of care directed toward materials, relationships, land, and self. Inside a building mid-becoming, the exhibition held together the intimate and the collective, the personal gesture and the broader question of what it means to tend to something before it is whole.
