PAINT (RED) SAVE LIVES
For a few weeks in the autumn of 2019, walls in eighteen cities carried the same color. Ahead of the sixth Global Fund Replenishment Conference, more than 25 artists painted murals and installations from Accra to Oslo, Manila to Lima, each turning a piece of their own city (RED) in the fight against AIDS.
The work lived where people already were: on facades, along streets, in neighborhoods the artists knew. A campaign of this kind could have stayed on screens. Here it became something passed on the way to work, in a visual language each city could read as its own.
The program was curated by Scott Lawin of the Museum of the Street, with Art In Context producing on site in every city. On October 10th, the Global Fund reached its US$14 billion goal, funding expected to save 16 million lives.
